The Best Comforters of 2024 – A Buyer’s Guide

Don't buy a comforter until you read this!

Choosing the right bedding & getting a good night's sleep relies on three key points: Comfort, Temperature control & Value for money.

Most people are likely sleeping in cotton or polyester comforters which are a popular choice because of the price or lack of knowledge. We investigate some of the top bedding companies on the market in 2024 and find out how they're changing the sleep industry!

Bamboo Comforters are a relatively new product that has started gaining popularity this year because of their superior benefits. The majority of Bamboo Comforters come with hefty price tags because of their quality, however, we discovered the company 'Cosy House Collection' that have been creating waves on social media and in the news with their high-quality Bamboo bedding that comes with a ridiculously low price tag!

Doctors say that we get the deepest, healthiest sleep when our bodies are cool, comfortable, and able to breathe. There's nothing worse than bedding that retains heat and moisture which makes you hot. (Ahem: Night-sweats anyone?)

Finally – you’ll want a comforter which is Hypoallergenic & Anti-bacterial. We've found that cotton isn’t very good at being either of these things & tends to hold pollen, allergens & bacteria until it’s washed! Unless your bedding is being washed daily, you’re likely suffering (from allergens) while you sleep and you just don’t know it.

It can be difficult to know which are the best Comforters on the market. That's why Great Life Tips has compiled months of research about this emerging category. We’ll show you what to look for and what to avoid when picking your perfect comforter or duvet insert, and how it can help transform your sleep.

Benefits of extra sleep & rest:

Helps you maintain weight

  • Better energy control
  • Maintain correct hormone levels

Cognitive Health

  • Boosts Memory
  • Enhances Processing Speed

Cardiovascular Health

  • Aids Cardiovascular Function
  • Helps Maintain Normal Blood Flow

Stronger immune system

  • Bolsters Immune System
  • Helps to fight off illness &  infection

What You Need In The Perfect Comforter

Taking all of the healthful attributes listed above into consideration, we've boiled down a list of four key characteristics you should always look for in a great comforter. Try to seek out all of these qualities:

Temperature Regulation

The problem with most comforters on the market is they are not very versatile in regards to temperature regulation & temperature changes that come with the seasons.

Polyester/Microfiber comforters can work great for winter months, but they may leave you overheated and sweaty the rest of the year.

The top cotton comforters can be breathable and cooling in the summer months, but won't help to regulate temperatures the rest of the year when you need them to.

Bamboo comforters are naturally temperature-regulating and wick away moisture allowing you to stay cool and dry year-round.

Softness & Comfort

The best comforters are silky soft,  even softer than Egyptian cotton while offering a heap of additional features. Scientifically-backed, Bamboo comforters are more effective at moisture wicking, keeping you cool and dry through out the night for maximum comfort.

Hypoallergenic

Allergens such as dust mites and mold can thrive when paired with comforters that allow them to thrive causing endless nights of tossing and turning from symptoms like itchy throat, runny nose, and watery eyes. Luckily, bamboo comforters are hypoallergenic, breathable, and antimicrobial.

It is the combination of these features, working together, that raises their individual benefits exponentially.

Anti-Bacterial

Traditional fabrics like cotton are a breeding ground for bacteria causing bad odors, stains, and even acne. Bamboo naturally has antibacterial properties. The combined benefits of bamboo allow your comforters to stay fresher, for longer (we found about 2x as long compared to traditional cotton)

What To Avoid when buying Comforters

A High Thread Count Isn't Always Better

The higher the thread count, the better the comforter, right? Actually, no (We were shocked to discover this too!) Thread count is an incredibly out-dated method for measuring cotton sheets. It's actually considered to be an outdated form of measurement for gauging bedding quality, most people now measure sheets by GSM (Grams per square meter).

Higher thread count bedding also mean a tighter weave causing them to lose any benefit of cooling and breathing.

Chemicals

Many comforters are finished with chemicals that are harmful to your skin & body. Companies process their comforters with chemical finishes to stop shrinking, wrinkling, and pilling in the wash.  It's incredibly important to look for OEKO-TEX certifications when buying comforters.

Consumers often think they're safe with Cotton bedding, however, because of the way they're grown cotton is often sprayed with chemicals & pesticides that carry over into the final product. This is a recipe for disaster when you're sleeping in this bedding for 7-8 hours a day.

The best way to ensure your comforters are free of chemicals and/or harmful substances is to buy from one of the reputable brands carrying a OEKO-TEX Certifications OEKO-TEX certifies that the product has been tested for harmful substances and that they are, therefore, harmless for human health and safe to use.

Sheets & Giggles down-alternative comforter is made with a blend of eucalyptus & polyester filling. The 100% eucalyptus exterior is soft and fairly breathable, however, at the time of writing this review only 2 colors are offered.

While we do like the eucalyptus, it's worth nothing this is not for the budget concious, Starting at $170 for a queen.

The Bottom Line

The Luxury Down Duvet California Design Den features real down (though for animal-lovers we understand this may not be your cup of tea) so if you prefer an alternative/synthetic down skip this one.

California Design Den's comforter is soft and fluffy but it comes at a higher price and ultimately we were left missing the thermal regulating properties of bamboo.

Buffy’s comforter touts a 100% eucalyptus exterior AND filling. This is a great pick for those not worried about a budget (their king/cal king comforter starts at $259.00) Unfortunately there is only one color option offered, but this may change over time.

PROS

  • Real 'ethically-sourced' down fill

CONS

  • Absorbs Moisture/Sweat
  • Not As Breathable as Bamboo

The Bottom Line

Casper’s mattresses are well known, so we wanted to see how their comforter/duvet insert stacked up. Boasting 100% Cotton with ‘ethically-sourced’ down fill. Currently only offered in white and while it is comfy and lightweight, the comforter commands a pretty steep price ($289) we feel may be partially because of the brand name on it.
